700 Strong- Building a Better World, One Hour at a Time

Putting positive energy out there is the ultimate investment into a better world. Our Dogeared staff and community has long been involved in volunteering and giving back to causes that are near and dear to us and genuinely help others. Today, we are celebrating the success and accomplishments as a team by reaching over 700 hours of community and volunteering services since January! To date, the team has reached 744 hours through our involvement in opportunities including Heal the Bay, Locks of Love, Step Up Women’s Network, the American Cancer Society, Baby 2 Baby and the Do Good Bus.

Each event allows us to be a part of something greater. Our events are accessible and exciting, encouraging our entire team team to get involved and give back! Volunteering opportunities are chosen by our amazing “Karma in Action” team. The Karma in Action group meets once a month to determine events and opportunities for the company to be involved in and how to get employees to participate. The spirit of karma resonates through the program reminding staffers that “we are all connected.”

Since January, our Dogeared team has participated in team outings as well as individuals volunteering on their own time by assisting therapeutic riders at the Shadow Hills Riding Club raising funds for the Children’s Hospital on a monthly basis or mentoring and teaching at educational institutions.

Our program and Karma in Action team continue to inspire and encourage us to involve ourselves in causes that help those in need. We believe that everyone can be the change and help us create a better world!

Jokes, Jewels & Saving the Planet: A Day on the Set of Ellen

Most days, you stroll on into work, turn on your computer, check your emails, return phone calls and settle into your regular routine. Then there are days when work decides to shake things up a bit, and asks you to attend the taping of Ellen for their Earth Day episode because the company you happen to work for, Dogeared, just so happens to be doing an amazing audience giveaway. Work can be so demanding sometimes.

I was invited, along with Becky, our marketing manager, and Rachael, our social networking guru, to attend the Ellen show at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, where it would be revealed that Dogeared was not only planting a tree for every single audience member to benefit Earth Day, but would also be gifting the entire audience with a $150 gift certificate to shop at www.dogeared.com. It’s time like these that I need to pinch myself for being a part of a company that pretty much has “extremely generous” and “remarkably socially conscious” on lock.

The three of us arrived at the WB lot and proceeded through the security gates where one of Ellen’s staff members greeted us (I’m convinced the prerequisite to be hired at Ellen is that you have to be awesome, hilarious and completely down to earth). As we passed huge trucks loading and unloading props and sets for various sound stages, and studio regulars whizzing by on bicycles (the fastest way to travel on the lot), the history of Warner Bros. studios definitely wasn’t lost on this film buff. After all, these studio walls have seen everything from Casablanca to Gremlins to Argo being filmed here, so I may have been keeping a cool exterior, but the cinephile in me was definitely nerding out a bit.

We were escorted backstage and up to our very own Dogeared green room where I resisted the urge to immediately dive into the free food basket, and instead unpacked some surprise swag we brought for the staff. What can I say? We love to give, and one of the best parts of my job is seeing the reaction on folks’ faces when I hand them a piece of jewelry…just because. There we watched the live stream of the taping, and were elated to see the audience’s reactions to Dogeared’s contribution to the show.

As silly as it sounds, when you work with something day in and day out, you can momentarily forget how important something small, yet meaningful, can be to someone. Like a necklace that celebrates putting good karma back into the world, or a bracelet that reminds you (not to) worry.

After the show wrapped, our Ellen escort brought us down to the set to snap some pictures and introduced us to the dedicated crew that make the show such a well-oiled machine. Every single person we met personally thanked us for being a part of the show. It was refreshing to see a group of people (apart from Dogeared) who love getting up and going to work in the morning.

As Becky, Rachael and I made our way off the palm tree lined lot and back to reality (complimentary Ellen mug in hand), we were a giddy trio of schoolgirls happy to have been a part of something equal parts Hollywood glitz and philanthropic. All in all, it definitely wasn’t a bad way to spend the workday.

Best bridal shower ever? At Krista’s (gorgeous) shower, the bride wasn’t the only person showered with gifts! Dogeared sales rep, Lisa, gave each guest in attendance a beautiful Dogeared Sparkle Karma necklace! The guests put them on immediately and many agree that they were the “highlight of the day!”

On Valentine’s Day, five members of Team Dogeared gave something even better than flowers and candy—they volunteered their time at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Gardena! The ReStore sells new and used home furnishings and building materials to the public at great discounts. As volunteers, our team organized and moved merchandise to the sales floor and assisted customers. A big thank you to Francine, Irene, Deanna, Jackie & Markeesa for participating!

Our very own Elsa (along with over 200 other participants) donated 10 inches of hair to Locks of Love during a UCLA event last week! Elsa learned of the event thanks to her sister, who works at the campus.

Elsa, who grew her hair for one year in preparation, decided to donate simply because she wants to make the children who have lost their hair due to a illness happy. Prior to the event, she was a bit nervous but even more excited. Now she’s enjoying her new look… she feels great that she was able to help someone in need!

We think she looks beautiful before AND after! You rock, Elsa! :)

There’s no better time than the holidays to help our four-legged friends in need!

Dogeared team-member Alex, a major animal advocate, organized a donation drive to help support the L.A. County Animal Shelter in Downey—recognized as the most overpopulated shelter in the country. Thanks to generous contributions from the team, Alex was able to raise $300 in only one week! She used the money to purchase food, fleece blankets, toys and grooming supplies for the shelter animals.

Over the holiday weekend, Alex made several trips to the shelter to donate the haul! She was even given a tour of the facilities so she’d be able to see exactly where the donations would be used. Thank you, Alex, for your tireless efforts on behalf of these animals and thanks to Team Dogeared for helping to make it possible!
